The Signing Ceremony for the Beijing Convention on the Judicial Sale of Ships Successfully Held in Beijing
On September 5, 2023, the signing ceremony for the Beijing Convention on the Judicial Sale of Ships (hereinafter referred to as the "Beijing Convention") was successfully held in Beijing. During the ceremony, ministers, heads of delegations, United Nations officials, and senior Chinese officials witnessed the opening for signature of the Beijing Convention. This convention is the first global convention dedicated to the judicial sale of ships and the first UN convention in the maritime field that names after a Chinese city.
The purpose of the Beijing Convention is to govern the international effects of judicial sales of ships, ensuring that such sales confer a clean title upon purchasers. The Beijing Convention is of great significance in promoting the healthy development of the shipping industry, as it enhances legal certainty regarding the judicial sale of ships, provides security and predictability for the multilateral trading system, and protects the lawful rights and interests of shipowners and relevant creditors.
On the afternoon of September 5, the international symposium on the Beijing Convention was held at the Beijing International Convention Center. Wang Shumei, a permanent member of the Judicial Committee of the Supreme People's Court (at the vice-minister level), attended the event and delivered a speech. She expressed the hope that all the signatories would strengthen cooperation to continuously improve the international maritime law system and strive for the unification of legal institutions. Furthermore, she called for strengthened innovation to continuously optimize the legislative concepts of international maritime law and promote common development, as well as enhanced sharing to continuously expand achievements in international maritime legislation and jointly advance the field.
