Introduction to Nanjing Maritime Court
Nanjing Maritime Court of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as "the Court") is situated in Jiangsu Province, a region on China's eastern coast uniquely endowed with a comprehensive landscape, encompassing vast seas, major rivers, and a significant lake. Spanning a maritime area of 37,500 square kilometers and a coastline of 954 kilometers, the province serves as a pivotal intersection for the two national strategies—the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Integrated Development of the Yangtze River Delta, while functioning as a crucial gateway for the Belt and Road Initiative. In recent years, Jiangsu has witnessed robust growth in its marine economy. The province consistently ranks first nationwide in annual port cargo throughput, exceeding 3.6 billion tons, and accounts for around 47% of the national total across the three major shipbuilding indicators (i.e., shipbuilding completion volume, new orders, and orders at hand). Furthermore, Jiangsu's gross marine product has surpassed the trillion-yuan threshold for the first time.
Established on December 4, 2019, the Court operates with eight internal functional organs and maintains four dispatched tribunals in Lianyungang, Nantong, Taizhou, and Suzhou. Since its inception, the Court has accepted 18,927 cases of various types and concluded/executed 18,277 cases. In 2025 alone, the Court accepted 4,899 cases and concluded/executed 4,249 cases, with both figures ranking third among all maritime courts in China. That same year, the Court accepted a total of 515 cases involving foreign, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan parties, representing a 37.7% year-on-year increase, while the average case resolution time decreased by 19.69 days year-on-year. It’s worth noting that foreign parties in 26 cases with no actual connection to China voluntarily chose to initiate litigation or apply for ship arrest at this Court.
