Strengthening Synergies to Fortify the Rule of Law for Marine Ecology

Upholding the rule of law to safeguard marine resource development and environmental protection is a crucial measure in building a maritime powerhouse. To celebrate the sixth anniversary of the collaboration between Jiangsu's maritime judicial and administrative organs, the Nanjing Maritime Court organized a symposium on July 11 titled "Safeguarding Marine Resource Development and Environmental Protection through the Rule of Law." The event was attended by senior officials from relevant departments of ten provincial agencies, including the Departments of Natural Resources, Ecology and Environment, and Transport of Jiangsu Province, and chaired by Wang Yun, Vice President of the Nanjing Maritime Court.
The meeting briefed the Nanjing Maritime Court's work over the past five years in serving and safeguarding marine resource development and environmental protection. During the discussion session, representatives exchanged views on the experiences, achievements, and challenges related to marine resource development and environmental protection facing the marine economy. The discussion covered a wide range of sectors, including shipbuilding, the offshore industry, marine fisheries, maritime transportation, and marine renewable new energy sources. Furthermore, the dialogue delved into key areas, focusing on the approvals for marine resources development, environmental law enforcement and regulation, and ecological damage compensation.
In the next phase, the Nanjing Maritime Court will further strengthen the "1+10" justice-administration collaboration mechanism. Adhering to a problem-oriented approach, the Court will conduct joint research with relevant functional departments on legal issues regarding emerging maritime industries and new business models, sea area utilization and protection, the use of ecological damage compensation funds, and non-litigation administrative enforcement. These efforts aim to collectively resolve complex bottlenecks hindering effective maritime justice and law enforcement, foster a legal community for marine ecological environmental protection, and provide robust legal safeguards for the high-quality development of Jiangsu's marine economy.
